Firewall Installation – Initial Steps

Firewall Installation – Initial Steps

Overview

This guide outlines the essential steps to take before installing a firewall at a client's work environment. Proper planning and communication are crucial to ensuring a smooth and efficient setup.

1. Initiate Client Communication

The first and most important step is to obtain the client's email address and start communication via email. This ensures that all discussions, approvals, and confirmations are documented for future reference.

2. Schedule an On-Site Assessment

To better understand the client's network infrastructure, schedule an in-person meeting. This visit allows you to:
โœ… Assess the office layout and Ethernet cable routing.
โœ… Identify existing network devices and their placements.
โœ… Evaluate possible obstacles that might affect firewall installation.

3. Gather Information on the Existing Router & ISP

Before proceeding with the firewall setup, itโ€™s essential to check the router model and identify the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

๐Ÿ”น Router Compatibility Check:

  • Some routers can be difficult when enabling Bridge Mode, which is necessary for the firewall to take control of network traffic.

  • For example, Hitron routers take approximately 15 minutes to restart/reboot after enabling Bridge Mode and saving changes.

  • Always verify if Bridge Mode has been successfully enabled and is working properly before proceeding with the installation

Important Note About Bridge Mode

โš ๏ธ When you enable Bridge Mode on a router, its built-in WiFi functionality will be disabled.

This happens because the router is now acting solely as a pass-through device, allowing the firewall to manage network traffic instead.

Note: Enabling Bridge Mode on the router will disable its built-in WiFi. Advise the client to have an Access Point ready to restore WiFi connectivity after enabling Bridge Mode.
